What happens after a grand jury investigation?

Posted by Robert Abtahi | Apr 10, 2025 | 0 Comments

A grand jury investigation is a legal proceeding in which a panel of jurors is convened to hear evidence and determine whether there is sufficient probable cause to bring criminal charges against a suspect. The process is typically used in cases involving serious felonies and complex investigations.

After a grand jury investigation, several outcomes are possible, depending on the decision of the grand jury:

  1. Indictment: If the grand jury finds sufficient evidence to support the charges, they will issue an indictment. An indictment is a formal accusation that initiates criminal proceedings against the suspect.

  2. No indictment: If the grand jury finds that there is not enough evidence to support the charges, they will issue a "no bill." This means that the suspect will not be charged with the alleged crime.

  3. Continuation: In some cases, the grand jury may choose to continue the investigation and request more evidence or testimony before making a final decision.

It's important to note that a grand jury investigation is a secret proceeding, and the proceedings are not open to the public. The purpose of this secrecy is to protect the privacy of the accused and to encourage witnesses to testify freely without fear of retaliation.
